The third disc contains the digital copy whichhas most likely expired. The film was directed by Hamilton Luske, ClydeGeronimi, and Wilfred Jackson (who, either alone or in various combinations,have also contributed to some of Disney’s other best-known and most belovedanimated features, including [Sharpsteen] “Snow White andthe Seven Dwarfs”, “Pinocchio”, “Fantasia”, “Dumbo”, “The Reluctant Dragon” –animated sequences, “Bambi”, “Saludos Amigos” – animated sequences, “Make MineMusic”, “Song of the South” – animated sequences, “Fun and Fancy Free”, “MelodyTime” – animated sequences, “So Dear to My Heart” – animated sequences, “The Adventuresof Ichabod and Mr. Toad”, “Cinderella”, “Alice in Wonderland”, “Peter Pan”, “Benand Me”, “Lady and the Tramp”, “Sleeping Beauty”, “Donald in Mathmagic Land” –animated sequences, “One Hundred and One Dalmatians”, and “Mary Poppins” –animated sequences). The directors oversaw a staff of directing animators, eachof whom was assigned to manage the looks and movement of one or morecharacters, and this feature would mark the last time that all of the group ofanimators known as Disney’s Nine Old Men – Marc Davis, Milt Kahl, Eric Larson, Frank Thomas, OllieJohnston, Ward Kimball, John Lounsbery, Wolfgang Reitherman, and Les Clark –would work together. The screenplay is from eight various Disney writers andstory contributors basing their work on the two J. M. Barrie worksentitled – the 1904 play “Peter Pan, orThe Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up” by J. M. Barrie and the 1911 novel “Peter andWendy” also by Barrie, which is based on the play. The animated feature stars thevoice talent of Bobby Driscoll (as Peter Pan – he also served as thelive-action reference model for Peter Pan for the close-up scenes), KathrynBeaumont (as Wendy Darling – Beaumont also voiced Alice in the Disneyproduction of “Alice in Wonderland”), Hans Conried (as Captain Hook and –continuing the tradition of the stage play – Conreid also voices George Darling),Bill Thompson (as Mr. Smee as well as several members of Hook’s pirate crew), HeatherAngel (as Mary Darling), Paul Collins (as John Darling), Tommy Luske (son ofdirector Hamilton Luske, as Michael Darling), and Candy Candido (as the IndianChief). Additionally, Stuffy Singer, Johnny McGovern, Robert Ellis, and JeffreySilver provided voices for Slightly, the Twins, Cubby, and Nibs – The LostBoys. June Foray, Connie Hilton, Karen Kester, and Margaret Kerry voiced themermaids. Foray also voiced the Squaw Woman, who orders Wendy to get firewoodwhile everyone else celebrates Peter’s rescue of Tiger Lily. Tom Conway was thefilm’s narrator. “Peter Pan” is an animatedadventure fantasy film. The film’s plot follows Wendy Darling and her twobrothers John and Michael, who meet the never-growing-up Peter Pan and travelwith him to the island of Never Land to stay young, where they also have toface Peter’s archenemy, Captain Hook. In 1935, Walt Disney beganconsidering plans to adapt Barrie’s play into an animated feature. He purchasedthe film rights from Paramount Pictures in 1938 and began preliminarydevelopment in the next year. However, following the attack on Pearl Harbor,Disney shelved the project when his studio was contracted by the United Statesgovernment to produce training and war propaganda films. The project sat idlein development for the rest of the decade until it experienced a turnaround in1949. To assist the animators, live-action reference footage was shot withactors on soundstages. “Peter Pan” was released onFebruary 5, 1953, becoming the final Disney animated feature released throughRKO Radio Pictures before Disney founded his own distribution company. The filmwas entered into the 1953 Cannes Film Festival. Upon its release, the filmearned positive reviews from film critics and was a box office success. Itsrepresentation of the Native Americans received retrospective criticism. A sequel, titled “Return to NeverLand”, was released in 2002 and a series of direct-to-DVD prequels focusing onTinker Bell began in 2008.
